DolfansNYC Reacts to Dolphins Drafting Tannehill

Friday, April 27th, 2012

The Miami Dolphins finally selected a quarterback in the first round of the NFL Draft for the first time since 1983 (Dan Marino), taking Texas A&M’s Ryan Tannehill with the eighth overall pick.

As Commissioner Roger Goodell walked up to the podium at Radio City Music Hall and announced the selection last night, more than 20 members of DolfansNYC were captured by television cameras, cheering and chanting from the stands.

Check out the video below from NFL.com to see us singing the Dolphins fight song and showing our support for the aqua and orange in New York around the one-minute mark.

While Tannehill comes with a lot of questions marks – he incredibly started more games at wide receiver in college (30) than quarterback (20) and passed for 5,450 yards with 42 touchdowns and 21 interceptions – he also played under Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman for four years and has the size, arm strength and athleticism to become the franchise QB the team has long desired.

Asked about the inescapable Marino comparison, Tannehill called it “humbling” and said he’s looking forward to getting some tips from the Hall-of-Famer.

“He’s a legend and was a great quarterback for the Miami Dolphins franchise, and I’m excited to hopefully reach out to him and learn from him,” he said. “I don’t think I’m trying to fill his shoes – I’m my own player and I have a lot to learn and I’m excited to get started.”

We’ll have plenty more thoughts and analysis down the line, including whether Tannehill should be the opening day starter over Matt Moore, but for now, let’s all welcome the newest member of the Dolphins to South Beach.

Dolfans NYC At The Draft!

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

Hey guys!

Thank you for your patience while we sorted out our plans to attend Round 1 of the Draft. Looks like the NFL is organizing wristbands/tix the same way they did last year. On Wednesday, fans line up in the evening and the NFL says that they will give wristbands at midnight. (last year they did it a little sooner). On Thursday, fans with wristbands line up and are given their tix a little after 6pm.
With that said, here is the DolfansNYC meet-up plan….
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25th – Meet at 8:00pm on 6th Avenue between 49th and 50th. There is a giant fountain on the west side of the street. Let’s meet in front of the fountain in the middle of the block. At approximately 8:10pm, the group will walk across the street to Radio City so that we can line up together, so please don’t be late. The security guards are pretty strict and don’t usually let people jump in line with their friends, so it’s best we walk over together.

THURSDAY, APRIL 26th – Meet at 6:00pm at the same spot in front of the fountain. At 6:10pm we will walk over together to line up and get our tix. Again, please do not be late.

Please reply to this e-mail if you 100% know that you will be there so we can make a list of how many people to expect at the meet-up spot. We will have access to Facebook and e-mail, so if your plans change and you can’t make it or are running late, please post something on the DolfansNYC Facebook page or send a note to us here at dolfansnyc@gmail.com

Thanks and see you Wednesday!!

Dolfans NYC Draft Event

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Sorry we have been distant.  This lockout is getting to us!  But we have some details about our most exciting draft event.  Dolfans NYC is going to roll deep and we want you to come with us!

Though there is some uncertainty as far as the upcoming season, the show must go on. And in this case, the show is the 2011 NFL Draft! The Dolphins have the 15th pick and it’s anyone’s guess as to what they plan on doing with it. All we know is that we want to get everyone together to see it happen!! Who’s in?!?!

Here’s the deal….

WEDNESDAY, April 27th – Fans can line up at Radio City Music Hall starting at 10pm. At midnight, wristbands will be given at a first come, first served basis.

THURSDAY, April 28th – Fans with a wristband can line up at 6:00pm to receive their tickets. Please note that tickets have seating assignments on them, so the plan is for us all to go together!

So….on Wednesday, let’s meet up at 8pm, which should be early enough to get a good spot in line. For anyone who has been to the Draft before, it’s nearly impossible to join your friends once they line up, so it’s important that we all line up together. Radio City is on 50th and 6th. There’s a Magnolia Bakery on the corner of 49th and 6th. Let’s meet there at 8:00pm and walk over together to line up.

On Thursday, let’s meet up at that same Magnolia Bakery at 6:15pm so we can walk over and get tickets with seats together. The tickets are given out in a random order so showing up early doesn’t give you an advantage. We aren’t meeting up until 6:15 to give every one a chance to get to midtown after work.

For anyone who wants to meet up once inside Radio City, please check our Facebook and Twitter pages. We will post where we are sitting.

Please email us if you plan on joining, so we have a good idea of how many people to expect. If you do attend, please don’t forget to bring your Phins gear! (towels, flags, banners, etc).

Go Dolphins!!

Fitzy Vs. DolfansNYC

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

DolfansNYC had a little run in at the 2010 NFL Draft with none other than Paul “Fitzy” Fitzgerald.  Fitzy is some sort of YouTube clown who likes to dance around and make jokes about football.  He was wearing a very cute Brady throwback, which I am sure confused him at first since he probably wasn’t aware New England had a football team before 2001.  Anyway, this guy overcame all the “18 and 1” and  “Fuck Tom Brady” chants long enough to ask some football fans some questions.  I asked him one myself “How’s Wes Welker’s knee doing?”  He had a cute response I am sure, but I try not to pay attention to what anyone from Boston has to say.

Eventually we came together in our hatred of the Jets, and I led DolfansNYC in a lovely J-E-T-S Suck Suck Suck chant around the 3:25 mark in the video. In all seriousness, Fitzy, aka Nick Stevens is a pretty funny dude and this video is well worth watching. Enjoy.

Dolfans NYC At The NFL Draft

Monday, April 26th, 2010

About a dozen members of Dolfans NYC met up at the NFL draft. There were more of us originally planning on going but there was rain and some miscommunication and not everyone showed up. Still, we had a pretty nice group as we waited in line for 5 hours on Wednesday and 3 hours on Thursday. A few of us even went back the next day, but we only stood around for about an hour. It was an awesome time despite the lines. All the football fans were talking smack and talking football. We all love the game and it was just a great time.

I can’t tell you guys anything you probably don’t already know about our draft picks, but I did meet one of Jered Odrick’s high school coaches and he had nothing but amazing things to say about the guy. He said he will make our OLB’s so much better because the Olinemen will never be able to get past him. He talked about the guys character and how psyched we should be. My freshman year roommate at Penn State still lives in State College, PA told me a lot of the same stuff, and compared him to Pittsburgh DT Aaron Smith. That’s some high praise.

Anyway, this update is mostly just to share with you some of the pictures I took at the draft. There are some nice ones, check it out.

Ps. Check out our new t-shirts in the pictures!

Jeff Ireland Draft Chat!

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

The Dolphins are planning big things for the fans for the upcoming draft.  I just got this in my inbox from the Dolphins.

MiamiDolphins.com will provide live video coverage as General Manager Jeff Ireland hosts his annual pre-draft press conference on Thursday, April 8, 2010, at 12:30 p.m. After the press conference at 1:00 p.m., Ireland will take part in a 30-minute Live Video Chat with Dol-Fans. We ask that fan please be sure to submit your first name, city and state with their question. To submit a question for the Dolphins General Manager, please go to www.MiamiDolphins.com/AskJeffIreland.

Its not often that the Dolphins give access to Jeff, much less fan access, so I hope you guys take the chance to send in a quesiton or two.  I know I have a lot to ask… although very little of it has to do with the draft.

I think my first question might be HOW THE HELL DO YOU LET JASON TAYLOR VISIT THE STINKING JETS!!!?!?!!!??

Good lord, my heart is breaking today.  Let’s just hope this is a smoke screen that actually works in getting JT signed for another two years.  I want him to retire a Phin and it’s not like we are swimming in pass rushers…

On a club update, we are trying to organize a trip to watch the first round of the draft live.  We wanted to do a draft party, but I think we instead are going to bring out a group to the draft.  Hopefully we will have t-shirts by then! Get excited.

And lastly, remember to check out Run Ricky Run on ESPN on April 27th.  It should be really intresting.

Go Dolphins!
